A professional website is no longer optional for self-employed people in Vienna – it’s essential. But many make fundamental mistakes that cost them clients. Here are the five most common ones – and how to avoid them.
1. No Mobile-Optimised Design
Over 60% of Google searches in Austria come from smartphones. That means more than half of your potential clients look at your website on their phone first.
A site that looks great on desktop but breaks on mobile instantly loses trust. Text that’s too small to read. Buttons that are hard to tap. Images that overflow the screen. These aren’t minor details – they’re reasons to leave.
What to do: Test your website on at least three different devices. If something doesn’t work on an iPhone or a mid-range Android, it doesn’t work for your clients.
2. Missing Google Maps Optimisation
When someone searches “hairdresser Vienna 1070” or “tax advisor Favoriten”, the first results appear as Google Maps cards. If you don’t appear there, you don’t exist for that client.
The problem: a website alone isn’t enough. You need a fully completed and verified Google Business listing. Address, opening hours, categories, photos – all of it needs to be correct.
What to do: Open business.google.com, verify your listing, and add at least 10 high-quality photos. It costs nothing – just a bit of time.
3. No Imprint or Outdated Privacy Policy
Austrian law is clear on this. Every commercial website needs a complete Impressum with your name, address, tax number, and contact details. On top of that, a GDPR-compliant privacy policy is mandatory.
A missing imprint or outdated privacy policy puts you at risk of warning letters and fines up to €2,000 – and that’s just for the imprint. GDPR violations carry much higher penalties.
What to do: Check your imprint is complete. Update your privacy policy if you use tools like Google Analytics, Facebook Pixel, or a contact form. When in doubt, consult a lawyer.
4. Slow Loading Times
Google measures how fast your website loads – and penalises slow sites with lower rankings. More importantly: people don’t wait. A page that takes more than three seconds to load loses more than half its visitors. They’re gone before they’ve even read your offer.
Common causes of slow websites: too many plugins (especially on WordPress), uncompressed images, cheap hosting, and no content delivery network (CDN).
What to do: Test your site with Google PageSpeed Insights (free, just search for it). A score below 70 on mobile is a problem. Compress your images. And reconsider cheap shared hosting – the speed investment pays off.
5. No Clear Call-to-Action
Visitors land on your website and don’t know what to do. No clear prompt, no visible contact button, no “Book now”. So they leave.
This is the most expensive mistake – because it’s not technical, it’s strategic. You already have the visitor on the page. You lose them because you didn’t tell them what to do next.
What to do: Every page needs a clear next step. On the homepage: “Request a free consultation”. On the services page: “Get a quote”. On the blog: “Get in touch”. The button needs to be visible – not buried in the footer.
